  • Giant Snake Solitary, Large, Stealthy
    Bite (d10+2 damage, 1 piercing) 12 HP 1 armor
    Close, Forceful
    Special Qualities: Amphibious

Monstrous snakes are stealthy, patient hunters that regard humanoids as prey. Most are simply dangerous animals, but the dark god Set blesses some serpents with evil intelligence. The viper spreads it's bite around and lets it's venom do it's work. The constrictor that scores a bite, immediately wraps it's coils around the victim and tries to squeeze them to death. Instinct: To hunt

    • Swallow a helpless victim whole
    • Sneak upon prey
    • Poison prey through a venomous bite
    • ...or...
    • Crush prey with an iron grip

  • Dire Rat Horde, Small, Devious
    Bite (d4 damage) 3 HP 0 armor
    Hand

Dire rats prefer to live underground, only venturing to the surface at night. They skulk in the sewers of large cities, and inhabit dark caves, ruins, and occasionally dark thickets in the wilderness. Dire rats are stealthy, and like to hunt in small packs, sneaking up on prey and ganging up on one creature at a time. Instinct: To nest and breed near an abundant food source

    • Gnaw off a toe
    • Inflict a nasty fever through a filthy bite

  • Ghast Group, Stealthy, Devious
    Claws (b[2d8] damage 1 piercing) 10 HP 0 armor
    Hand, Messy

Ghasts are a more powerful form of ghoul. Cursed upon death, they started as ghouls, but evolved through successful hunting and age, some becoming ancient. But even success and age cannot release the ghast from the ravenous, gnawing hunger for living flesh suffered by all ghouls. In fact, it's hunger has become stronger. Like ghouls, a ghast is a sentient form of undead, but the ghast's long undeath has left it with only a few, fading memories of it's former life. However, the ghast has evolved an ability to feed upon the memories of it's prey. This only adds to it's already insatiable hunger and desire for more victims. Ghasts lead packs of ghouls, haunting graveyards, battlefields, crypts, and any place where bodies are discarded or left unattended. Except for their powerful stench, ghasts are almost indistinguishable from ghouls. Instinct: To feed, always to feed

    • Stink to high heaven
    • Strike swiftly and silently from the shadows
    • Paralyze prey with a bit (elves are immune)
    • Feast on helpless victims and gain their memories

  • Ghoul Group, Stealthy, Devious
    Claws (b[2d6] damage 1 piercing) 10 HP 0 armor
    Hand, Messy

A ghoul's gnawing hunger for living flesh is never sated. It drives them in a neverending hunt for more victims. They haunt graveyards, battlefields, and crypts, dwelling any place where bodies are discarded or left unattended. Ghouls were once intelligent, evil humanoids who either turned to cannibalism, or lived lives of gluttony and greed, causing them to be cursed in death. Unlike a zombie or a skeleton, a ghoul retains sentience and many of the memories of it's life. However, it's perspective is twisted by it's death so that it recalls with torment a time when it was not driven by a gnawing hunger for living flesh. In the transformation, the skin sloughs away or turns a sickly cast of gray or green, the ghoul grows sharp teeth and claws to rend flesh and crack bones, and a long slender tongue to get at the soft marrow inside. Instinct: To feed, always to feed

    • Strike swiftly and silently from the shadows
    • Paralyze prey with a bite (elves are immune)
    • Feast on a helpless victim

  • Harpy Group, Devious, Intelligent, Hoarder
    Talons (b[2d6] damage 1 piercing) 6 HP 0 armor
    Close
    Special Qualities: Wings

Harpies use their sweet songs to pacify victims before tearing them to pieces with their claws. They favor dismal, wild settings such as swamps, badlands, and scrubland. However, they also haunt rocky coasts, ruins, and caves. Harpies are cruel, malicious, and domineering. They do not cooperate well with other creatures. However, they sometimes agree to serve powerful monsters or villains as scouts, spies, or assassins. According to legend, harpies are descended from an evil elf witch-queen who often took the form of a golden eagle to spy on her subjects. A mighty hero drove her into exile long ago, breaking the magic tiara that allowed her to change shape. The elf-queen and her unscrupulous children were cursed with half-bird forms for the rest of their days. The alluring song of the harpy is a legacy of the sinister enchantments wielded by the long-lost elf-queen against her people. Instinct: To torture and cause despair

    • Screech at foes who get too close
    • Croon a song to hypnotize prey

  • Bugbear Group, Large, Stealthy, Cautious
    Morningstar (d8+4 damage) 10 HP 2 armor
    Close, Forceful

Big, tough goblins that love to fight, bugbears dominate their smaller goblin kin, and are the champions, picked guards, and muscle for their more clever hobgoblin kin. Bugbears take whatever they want and bully others into doing their work. They hunt for food, eating any creature they can kill, including other goblins. Bugbears stand between 7 and 8 feet tall and weigh in as the largest and burliest of the goblins at 500 pounds. Bugbears are surprisingly sneaky for their size. They sometimes send out their smaller kin to lead overeager adventurers into a trap. If they can’t achieve surprise, bugbears look for chances to flank their foes. Instinct: To bully or eat the weak

    • Dominates lesser goblins
    • Ambush or flank

  • Deepfrog Hunter Group, Small, Stealthy, Intelligent
    spear (d8 damage) 6 HP 0 armor
    Close

The Deepfrog are humanoid frogs and are loosely related to the frogmen of the surface. Except they are albino and have kept their long frog tongues, which they aren't afraid to use to grab a weapon out of an enemies' hand. They are smarter than their above-ground cousins as well, and are very protective of their tribe. Instinct: protect the tribe

    • Strike from above
    • disarm enemy

  • Screechman Horde, Hoarder
claws, fangs (d6+2 damage) 3 HP 0 armor
    Close

These degenerate humanoids may have had human ancestors in the distant past, but they bear only slight resemblance to men in the current day. They are pigmentless albinos, entirely eyeless, with massive pointed ears, mouths full of fangs, and claws on their hands and feet. Both males and females may be encountered in a group, and both are equally vicious. They do not wear clothing, and attack with their filthy claws. The screechmen use echolocation to find their prey. Rather than the quiet clicks of bats, the screechmen issue horrible screams at regular intervals. It is thus virtually impossible to be surprised by a screech man. On the flip side, these screams are letting the screechmen know about the party’s presence, so it is impossible to surprise a screaming screech man. It is also incredibly hard to escape a screech man hunting party, as their screams allow them to “see” as far as 120’. Instinct: to gorge

    • Shriek and disorient
    • to gut
